WHY GIRLS MUST UGANDA IS TRAINING WOMEN ON SAFE BROWSING

Over the weekend, Girls Must Uganda, a local Youth led Feminist organisation, summoned over 20 young women activists, feminists, rights defenders, councillors, probation officers and journalists in Kabale and Rukiga districts for a lesson on digital safety.
Maurine Tukahirwa, the chief Executive Officer of Girls Must Uganda said the training involved practical skilling on secure browsing, anonymity and circumvention techniques necessary to create safe and empowering public spaces for young women leaders. She said this is because young women leaders serve in communities who are at high risk of child marriages, teenage pregnancy and gender base violence which is also rampant on the internet.
Tukahirwa explained that young women rights defenders on the other hand face digital insecurities due to their direct engagement in digital campaigns against online gender based violence, child marriage and teenage pregnancy.
She listed the insecurities as data theft, phishing, malicious malware attacks and hacking, especially during the month of May which is known as the menstrual health awareness month.
“Through building their capacity, we enable young women leaders to build online safe places for the unheard voices of teenage girls and women from these communities,” she outlined.
Girls Must Uganda hopes to achieve this through the E-skills Impact project 2022, and build a resilient online community of young women feminists and rights defenders prepared to make informed decisions and share knowledge with peers.
